Fall 2019 Panda Global Rankings Unveiled For Smash Ultimate

Numbers 50 through 31 have already been announced, with the rest coming soon

By Eli Horowitz • January 15, 2020

Unlike most other major fighting games, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has no pro tour and no official governing body. As such, it also has no official rankings. What it has instead are the Panda Global Rankings, known as the PGR or PGRU (to denote Smash Ultimate). These rankings may not feed into a year-end finale, but they do a great deal to establish players’ seedings at events and to promote players who are due for new (or renewed) sponsorships. As such, the list carries a great deal of importance in the Smash scene.

The most recent PGRU covers July 14, 2019 through December 15. The rankings themselves list each player, their main(s) and secondaries, their notable tournament results, and also their notable match wins. These variables are fed into an algorithm, which then produces the final results. To give some extra spice, each player is also given an “X-Factor” score that’s determined not by the algorithm but by a panel of Smash experts.

Together, all of this information makes for a superb resource for new fans and OGs alike. So far, we know which players are ranked 50th through 31st. You can read about the first set of players here and the second here. Subsequent articles will go up on the Red Bull website on January 17th, 21st, and 23rd.
