How Dads in the South African Fighting Game Community Balance Family and Competing

Radzinski interviews a few family men in the community

This past June, Father’s Day was celebrated for men in many countries. Fatherhood is a great blessing and a heroic act when done well. Fatherhood is also a big responsibility that often entails sacrificing things like video games. But these dads have found a way to balance family and their passion for gaming.

Radzinski interviews Solid Jago, King O2R, Iggy Daddy 1, and Lumi about their experiences of being a father and being part of the Fighting Game Community at the same time. They share their general experiences about being part of the FGC and how it has brought value to their lives. They then share the challenges of balancing family life and fighting game life.

As a dad myself, I can say that becoming a father is one of the greatest joys in my life. But I can attest to the challenges shared here of juggling family and playing fighting games. The time spent training and sessioning can be tough for spouses and children due to the attention that’s taken away from them. But being willing to have a give and take and to always put your familial duties first is what makes it possible (at least for me) to have some cake and eat some too.
